Thailand: Beverage manufacturers prepare for sugar tax

BANGKOK, 10 September 2019(NNT) - Effective from 1st October, the Excise Department will be imposing a new rate of sugar tax first announced in 2017 to encourage the general public to consume less sugar. Manufacturers have over the past two years reduced sugar content in beverages, and put a healthy beverage logo on 200 percent more products.

The Excise Department’s Deputy Spokesperson Nutthakorn Utensute has revealed the outcome of a survey of the general public, experts, and the beverage industry, on the taxation measure for beverages containing sugar under the Excise Tax Act BE 2560, and has made changes to the industry. The new measure increases tax on sugar added beverages incrementally every two years, at up to 5 baht per liter.
